I learned to sew at my mothers knee. She worked as a tailor, but also made most of my childhood clothes (as well as my brothers and sister before me). By the age of 12 I had my own sewing machine, a Singer 185k which I still have to this day.
I got involved in costume making during the 'Fire over England' celebrations in 1988 when the beacons, which had signalled the sighting of the Spanish Armada 400 years before, were re-built and lit once more. This became an annual event in the city where I was living, and after three years of Elizabethan re-enactment, we changed to Georgian and I took part in over 14 years of late 18th century and Regency re-enactment.
This has given me an understanding of what it is like to wear and work in costume all day, the pros and cons of various construction methods and an eye for fabrics and trimmings. Although my favourite era has to be 18th Century, I can make authentic outfits from any period, or I can make complete fantasy garments.
