Georgian begins with George I in 1714 to the death of William IV in 1837. Men certainly knew how to dress! The Georgian frock coat from about 1780 has to be one of my most favourite items of clothing. Prices start at £300.00 and go over and above £1000 for a fully embroidered court coat.
If you are looking for inspiration there are many books available from libraries as well as samples in museums, not to mention films. Some of the fabrics are quite startling to our eyes and look rather modern. The Georgians also had no qualms about embroidering over quite busy fabrics.

The full Georgian suit is a wonder. Sometimes all three pieces match, especially in earlier examples. Later the coat and breeches matched and had a contrasting waistcoat, sometimes the waistcoat and coat matched with different breeches. The coats don't usually fasten, the buttons being for show only. Occasionally they may have one or two hooks and eyes near the top to hold it closed edge to edge.
The following are all cut to the same shape using a pattern from a coat of 1790.
Violet Rose Coat
The first coat I made. Quite small, so although I still have this coat I doubt I will ever sell it. The violet braid is all applied by hand. A coat similar to this would be approximately £350.
Waistcoat in a mirror image, being a violet satin with black braid. From £90.00
Breeches made to go with this were plain black satin with violet braid around the knees.Cost approximately £80.
Red Dragon Coat
This is a man-made fibre, but an excellent weight to make this kind of coat. The black embroidery detail is actually an iron-on motif, but just added the right embellishment. A coat in this kind of fabric would cost from £300.
The waistcoat is in a silk mix and contrasted very well. One similar would cost £90.
Wedding Suit
Made for a very particular young man to get married in. He wanted a Gothic look, but based on period garments.
Coat in crushed purple shot velvet with silver embellishment. From £350.
Waistcoat, double breasted in a silver and white brocade, silk back. From £120.
Trousers, with a 'fall front' like Georgian breeches but cut full length in a fake suede. From £120.
Black silk shirt with crystal buttons. From £60. |

Mainly thanks to Beau Brummell (1778 to 1840), in the Regency period men's clothing became far more sober in colour but the cut and tailoring techniques became very refined, so chaps still cut a dash with their finely tailored coats.
Victoria was on the throne for over 60 years so, as with the ladies, costume changed greatly over this period.
For authenticity coats should be made from wool and prices begin at £400 for early designs. Later, from about 1860, more complicated coats begin at £550.
More pictures in the Gallery, coming soon.
Black Tail Coat
Made from black cotton gaberdine at the customers request, and made floor length. Approx £320.00 |
